Going to the Netherlands during the early Spring is a popular thing to do because of their tulips! The purpose of this article is to provide useful tips for seeing the best of them.
KEUKENHOF GARDENS
Some people feel like this garden is over-rated. Too expensive and too crowded. To that I say "No WAY!" This garden is one of the pretties places I have ever seen. I was absolutely blown away by the flowers here, and that they are only open two months a year! So much work goes into it for just those two months.
Tickets to Keukenhof will sell out, and in advance. Sign up for their newsletter to know exactly when their tickets for the season will go on sale. You won't want to miss it. Next tip- buy the FIRST slot of the day. You won't regret it. Not only will the lines for the bus be shorter but you will also have the garden to yourself for at least an hour. We walked around the gardens all by ourselves with hardly any people in sight. It was incredibly peaceful, and oh so beautiful. By the time we left a few hours later, it was very crowded.
If you are staying in Amsterdam and haven't rented a car, I would recommend getting a ticket to Keukenhof with a bus ticket. This was so helpful to have this transporation and was way cheaper than splitting an Uber ride. Again- get to the bus stop early. It didn't really matter that we had booked the first bus time, they'll allow you onto any bus. Getting home from Keukenhof with the bus was a LONG queue but it went pretty fast.
BICYCLE TOUR
There are bicycles to rent at the entrance to Keukenhof but we opted to do a tour. We did this for a couple of reasons... One being is that the queues for the bicycles at the front of Keukenhof are long and insane. Two being that we wanted a more guided experience with more information about the tulip fields so that we could learn as we rode around. I wouldn't have wanted to do it any other way! The bicycles were all in great condition, and we loved having a small group and a guide to lead us around. We learned so much about the pollination of tulips, the fields, the tulip industry, the farmers and how they care for the tulips. LOVED IT!
We booked with Tulip Bicycle Tour and the meeting point for the tour was a short walk down the street from Keukenhof. It was a lovely walk on the side of a tulip field and took us about 10-15 minutes to get there from the Keukenhof entrance.
ACCOMODATION
We opted to stay in Amsterdam, although some people prefer to stay out closer to the tulips. We stayed at the Apollo Hotel Amsterdam which is a part of the Marriott chain of hotels. We found this to be a great location to walk into Amsterdam city centre, and it was also convenient to walk to the bus stop to go out to to Keukenhof. It was also super affordable for Amsterdam standards. Highly recommend!
